Draft. This page is a starting point and must be reviewed (ideally by a solicitor) before The Book Market takes real payments.

Terms and conditions

These terms explain the rules for using The Book Market (thebookmarket.co.uk). By creating an account you agree to them. [Operator name, company number and registered address to be added.]

1. Who we are and what we do

The Book Market is an online marketplace that lets members buy, sell and swap new and second-hand books with each other. Sales are made between the buyer and the seller; we provide the platform and process payments through our payment provider, Stripe.

2. Your account

  • You must be 18 or over and live in the UK.
  • Keep your login details secure. You are responsible for activity on your account.
  • One person, one account. Information you give us must be accurate.

3. Listing books

  • Only list books you own and have the right to sell, with honest photos and an accurate condition.
  • Each listing is for one physical copy.
  • Not allowed: counterfeit or pirated copies, stolen goods, illegal content, or anything that breaks UK law.
  • We may remove listings or suspend accounts that break these rules.

4. Fees

Listing is free. Sellers receive the full listed price. Buyers pay a service fee of 60p plus 5% of the book price, and the delivery charge shown at checkout. All prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).

5. Buying, delivery and cancellations

Sellers must post books within [3] working days of a sale using a tracked service. [Delivery, cancellation and refund procedures to be finalised with the checkout stage.] If a book doesn’t arrive or is significantly not as described, contact us within [7] days of delivery to open a dispute.

Most sellers are private individuals, so consumer rights that apply when buying from a business (such as the 14-day cancellation period) may not apply. Where a seller is trading as a business, they must comply with consumer law.

6. Swaps

For posted swaps, each member pays for posting their own book. Both books should match their descriptions.

7. Our liability

We are not the seller of books listed by members. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

8. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms and will tell members about significant changes. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
